Sacramento Freeway Shooting Today – Sacramento Freeway Pursuit Ends in Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting on I-5
A police pursuit in Sacramento ended in a fatal officer-involved shooting on southbound Interstate 5 in Sacramento County, according to preliminary information from law enforcement officials.
Authorities say the incident began when deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for undisclosed reasons. The driver reportedly failed to comply, leading to a high-speed pursuit along the freeway. Multiple law enforcement units, including air support, joined the operation as officers attempted to safely contain the situation.
The pursuit came to an end when deputies boxed in the suspect’s vehicle on I-5. At that point, an encounter occurred between the suspect and officers, resulting in deputies discharging their weapons. The suspect was struck and pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency medical response.
No deputies were reported injured.
Officials have not released the identity of the suspect, pending notification of family. The circumstances leading to the initial stop and the escalation of force remain under investigation.
Crime scene investigators closed portions of the freeway for several hours while evidence was collected and witness statements were obtained. Authorities are reviewing body camera footage, dashcam video, and aerial surveillance as part of the investigation.
